If you fancy owning a drone there are a number of things you need to know . Since drones first came on the market  there has been a number of rules and regulations  which can limit their use . Drones now  cannot be flown in public places  and they cannot be flown to high . Many early drones could fly  upto 1000m ,but the limit now is 400ft and must be kept in line of site. There are many other regulations too.
There are now many drones on the market . Drones of different sizes and prices . The cheaper drones have little control when in the air and constantly need adjusted using the joysticks on the controller . Flight time will be around 4 to 6 mins. Better drones have better features, like GPS, gimbles, cameras and  have longer flight times. A drone with GPS for instance  will be able to hover in the sky without any user input. A drone may need to be connected to a PC or laptop for updates or to download  videos or photos, so you may need to be familiar with software.

Most high end drones need to be connected to a phone or tablet . This enables you to see what the camera on the drone sees and  view the status of the flight. Details like GPS, distance covered, battery time left, height, position etc can all be displayed.
The picture above is from the Bebop as displayed on a phone screen.
The Bebop also stores it's flight data onboard. This data is uploaded to the Bebop website. It can be then downloaded and added as an overlay on your finished video. The video editing software in order to do the is Garmin Virb and to download the flight data you need Flight Data Manager .

Flying a drone can be fun but there are many things to take into consideration. The batterys used are Lipo's and need a special charger . Letting the battery's  drain flat can render them useless , over charging them  can be a fire hazard. Each battery must be checked using a battery tester that test's each cell and should be done before each flight. Never store fully charged battery's for a length of time . Over winter periods, battery's are discharged to storage state. You will need a special fireproof bag to store them.
You will also need a supply of spare propellers . These can easily get damaged   when in contact with trees or bad landings and will need to be changed.
Treat your drone with great respect and fly safe & sensibly and it should last for many years.

A Drone consists of many parts . The main electrical parts are motor's, ECS's, Flight controller , receiver and in many of the high end drones much more electronic circuitry which can be expensive to repair. Gimbals and cameras are added  to the setup adding more expense. Things can go wrong especially after a bad landing or crash ,so repairs will need to be made, parts will need to be bought and fitted. So, a little experience in soldering and model making will come in handy. A set of screw drivers , small vice ,glue gun and some time on your hands is needed to get your drone back in the air .
